Children and Chiropractic

Some people are always surprised to hear that we take care of such young patients.  However, the truth is whether you have a large spine or a little one, if there is improper or hindered communication throughout the nervous system then our body is unable to function at 100%.

Our body’s nervous system is the controller. When communication channels become aggravated, distorted or damaged we may experience significant or subtle communication errors. In babies, this ineffective communication may present as colic, irritability, poor breast feeding and poor sleep habits. In toddlers and children, poor nerve communication may result in developmental delays, lack of concentration, behavioral problems, digestive issues and asthma. These are just a few in a long list of possibilities.

Real research, Real facts.
Why you should have your children adjusted monthly.

1. It helps boost the immune response.

A recent report from the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, 2016 includes a review of the literature supporting the role of chiropractic in co-managing children suffering from respiratory infections and fever.

“Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and the immune response” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy, a public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study. McCoy added, “Since the nervous system has a direct effect on the immune system and because the spine houses and protects so much of the nerve system it is important to have your child’s spine checked regularly for any interference but especially when their immune system is challenged.”

The unique aspect of this case study is the reduction of fever and related symptoms that accompanied the chiropractic care. After antibiotics, had failed to reduce the children’s symptoms. Abnormal position or movement of the spinal vertebra can develop and this can lead to nerve interference. It is this interference, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct.

2.  Chiropractic Care benefits emotional regulation and behavior.

On June 16, 2016, the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a case series documenting the positive effects of chiropractic care for special needs children. The study authors report the number of special needs children is continuing to rise at an alarming rate. "More children each year are being diagnosed with neurodevelopmental challenges ranging from Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Sensory Processing Disorder."

The study reports that the rate of autism has risen from 1 in 5000 in 1975, to 1 in 88 as of 2008.  The rate of ADHD has risen 16 percent since 2007 to the present where current estimates show that around 10 percent of children ages 4 to 17 are being diagnosed with the condition.  The number of children enrolled in Special Ed programs has risen 30 percent in the last 10 years and currently is at 13 percent of all school age kids being in these programs.

Each of the children received chiropractic care for the correction of subluxations that were determined to be present and showed improvement for their respective neurological issues after treatment.

3. It is the best option for ear infections.

Antibiotics, the usual allopathic treatment, are not consistently effective and often lead to a recurrence of ear infections. Studies show, the higher recurrence rate among children who took amoxicillin could be due to a depression of their body’s natural immune response as a result of taking an antibiotic in the early stage of infection. Antibiotic use in such cases may cause an “unfavorable shift” toward the growth of resistant bacteria, setting up a continuing cycle of repeat ear infections, which lands them back at the pediatrician for more antibiotics. Even the CDC says “antibiotics are not recommended to help treat many ear infections”.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics indicates that there is a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustments and the resolution of ear infections. 332 children with chronic ear infections participated in the study. Each child, ranging in age from 27 days to 5 years, was given a series of chiropractic adjustments. The results show that close to 80% of the children did not experience another ear infection within the six-month period following their initial visits. Wow!

4. Adjusting the spine changes the brain. Every brain, even your child’s!

A recently published study in the Journal of Plasticity documents these changes. This was an independent study with data collected and analyzed by scientists who had no preconceived ideas about Chiropractic. Heidi Haavik, DC, Ph.D., one of the researchers behind the study, said about the findings, “We do know that spinal function does affect brain function. There’s now solid evidence that adjusting the spine changes brain function. This is the fourth time that the effect of adjusting the spine has on the brain has been studied. This last time it was studied and confirmed by an independent medical researcher.” Neural Plasticity, Volume 2016 (2016). Online. [2] Haavik, H (2016), correspondence with Spinal Research via Nimrod Weiner. Spinal Research, April 12, 2016.

5. Scoliosis- a lateral curvature of the spine- is clinically significant in 5 percent of youngsters.

Early detection is key to keeping scoliosis under control and preventing the conditions associated with it, such as back pain, headache and, in severe cases, heart and lung disorders.  Most parents count on in-school screenings to catch scoliosis in their little ones.  However, recent studies reveal that these screenings typically do not effectively identify the disorder.

The Winchester Institute offers thorough examinations including a scoliosis screening, which provides a thorough assessment of a youngster’s current spinal health and risk of future postural disorders.

What kind of wellness role model are you?

Teaching your child to turn to medication only when absolutely necessary will help him or her avoid potentially hazardous side effects and discover the body’s innate healing power. By emphasizing prevention, rather than the indiscriminate use of over-the-counter medication, you can significantly affect your child’s concept of wellness-and his or her future health-related choices.
